Free Fire is giving away permanent skins : Here is how to use weapon mastery to get them

Most Free Fire players focus on unlocking new weapons. The players consistently climbing the ranked ladder are the ones leveling up the weapons they already use. Weapon Mastery is the system that rewards that discipline, and it gives you permanent skins, profile badges, and ranked advantages that money cannot buy directly.
This guide covers exactly how Weapon Mastery works, which weapons to prioritize, how to earn XP faster than the average player, and what mistakes to avoid so you are not grinding the same weapon twice as long as you need to.
The System Nobody Explains Properly
Weapon Mastery is a proficiency progression system built into Free Fire. Every weapon in the game has its own mastery track with four levels. You earn XP toward each level by using that specific weapon in matches, earning kills, landing headshots, and dealing damage.

The system tracks your performance with each individual weapon separately. Grinding your AR mastery does not carry over to your shotgun. Each weapon needs its own dedicated focus, which is why knowing which ones to prioritize matters before you start.
You can track your mastery progress through your profile or the News tab inside the game. The display shows your current level, total XP earned, and how far you are from the next tier.
Four Levels. One Permanent Skin. One Elite Badge.
Each weapon has four mastery levels. Think of them as milestones that reflect increasing competence and commitment with that specific gun.
▸Level 1: unlocks through basic use: playing matches with the weapon and dealing consistent damage across sessions.
▸Level 2: requires deliberate play: consistent kills and sustained damage output that shows real engagement with the weapon.
▸Level 3: is where it gets valuable. Reaching this tier permanently unlocks a weapon skin tied to that gun. No diamonds, no events, no luck. Just mastery.
▸Level 4: is the elite tier. Completing this earns you a profile badge that displays your mastery status and signals your experience to every player in the lobby.
The jump between levels gets steeper as you progress. Level 1 to 2 is straightforward. Levels 3 and 4 require focused grinding, which is exactly why the tips in this guide matter.
Not All XP Is Equal. Play to the Numbers.
Maximize your mastery progress each session by focusing on these actions: earning headshot kills, getting standard kills, and dealing weapon-specific damage. Each action triggers mastery XP, so be deliberate.

Headshot kills are your most efficient XP source. A headshot elimination earns double the XP of a standard kill. If you are grinding mastery, your aim practice, and your mastery grind become the same session. Every headshot you land in Clash Squad while working on your sensitivity is also pushing your mastery forward.
Clash Squad's 2x XP multiplier makes it the fastest mode for mastery progression by a significant margin. Battle Royale matches are slower because fights are spread further apart, and many rounds end without the weapon you are grinding even being relevant.
Grind Smarter, Not Longer
Play only Clash Squad when grinding for mastery. This guarantees frequent combat and maximizes Weapon Mastery XP through constant action.
Clash Squad gives you consistent combat from round one. Every round puts you in close to mid-range fights where your weapon is actively used. Combined with the 2x XP multiplier, a focused Clash Squad session generates more mastery XP per hour than an equivalent time in Battle Royale.
Set a goal of five to ten Clash Squad matches per weapon per day. At that rate, reaching Level 3 with most weapons takes two to three focused days, depending on your headshot rate.
Target headshots deliberately, not occasionally
Headshot kills earn 200 XP compared to 100 XP for a standard kill. Over a full grinding session, consistent headshots can nearly double your mastery progress. Spend fifteen minutes in Training Mode before each grind session to warm up your drag shot before queuing.
Players who grind mastery without working on their headshot rate spend twice as long reaching Level 3. The aim, practice, and mastery grind are the same investment when done correctly.
Use custom rooms when learning a new weapon.
For weapons you are not yet comfortable with, custom rooms with friends or guild members let you practice mechanics and earn mastery XP without ranked pressure. Solo bot rooms do not count toward mastery. You need real players in the lobby for XP to register.
Focus on one weapon at a time.
Grinding five weapons simultaneously means slow progress on all five. Pick one primary and one secondary per week. Complete or significantly advance one before adding another. Players who focus see Level 3 in days. Players who spread see Level 2 on everything after weeks.
Which Guns Are Worth Your Time Right Now
Not all weapons are equal in how much their mastery rewards your ranked performance. Prioritize weapons that are currently strong in the meta and that you will actually use in matches. Mastering a weapon you never play gives you a skin and nothing more.

The AC80 is the highest-priority weapon for players who play a sniper or precision role. Recent buffs have made it the strongest sniper in the current meta, and its headshot XP multiplier makes mastery grinding efficient. If you land headshots consistently, AC80 mastery progresses faster than almost any other weapon.
The MP5 is the top SMG choice for rushers right now. Fire rate improvements have made it the best close-range option for Clash Squad grinding, where its fast kill speed translates directly into fast XP accumulation.
What You Actually Get and Why It Matters
Weapon Mastery is one of the only ways in Free Fire to earn permanent weapon skins without spending diamonds or depending on limited-time events. Level 3 mastery on any weapon unlocks that weapon's mastery skin permanently, and it stays on your account regardless of future updates or events.
Level 4 unlocks a profile badge that displays next to your name in ranked lobbies. This badge signals mastery and experience with that specific weapon. It is a credibility signal that costs no money and cannot be purchased. It can only be earned.
In the current ranked season, CS-Rank MVP bonuses are tied to mastery XP. Performing as the top player in a ranked Clash Squad match earns bonus mastery points on top of your standard XP. For players grinding Heroic, this means your rank push and your mastery grind happen simultaneously rather than competing for your time.
The Habits That Are Silently Slowing You Down
▸Grinding in Battle Royale instead of Clash Squad. BR gives roughly half the mastery XP per hour because fights are less frequent and matches run longer. Every BR grind session is a Clash Squad session cut in half.
▸Skipping headshot practice. Headshots double your XP per kill. Players who ignore drag shot training take twice as long to reach Level 3 on every weapon they touch.
▸Spreading focus across too many weapons at once. Pick one weapon, advance it significantly, then move to the next. Simultaneous grinding slows everything and rewards nothing.
▸Not adjusting sensitivity before switching weapons. Each weapon handles differently. Grinding mastery with settings that fight the weapon's recoil means fewer kills per session and slower progress overall.
▸Stopping at Level 2 because a new meta weapon appears. Level 2 gives no skin and no badge. Always complete Level 3 before switching your focus to the next weapon.
Questions Players Ask Every Week
Which mode earns mastery XP the fastest?
Clash Squad. The 2x XP multiplier and consistent round-by-round combat make it significantly faster than Battle Royale. Ranked Clash Squad adds MVP bonuses on top of the base multiplier.
Can mastery progress be reset or lost?
No. Mastery XP is account-bound and permanent. Progress cannot be reset by Garena or by any in-game action. Once earned, it stays on your account regardless of what happens to the weapon in future patches.
Does the kill need to be the final blow, or does assist damage count?
The kill must be dealt by the weapon you are grinding for it to count as a kill toward mastery. Assist damage still earns damage XP, but at a lower rate. Always finish kills with your mastery weapon rather than using it only for suppression.
Is there a daily XP cap on mastery progress?
There is no confirmed hard daily cap on mastery XP. Match-based XP accumulates per match played. Playing more matches consistently outperforms trying to rush progress in one long session.
Which weapon reaches Level 3 the fastest?
The AC80 and MP5 currently offer the fastest paths to Level 3 due to their headshot efficiency and Clash Squad kill rate, respectively. Sniper players prioritize AC80. Rushers prioritize MP5.
Does Training Mode count toward mastery XP?
No. Training Mode kills and damage do not count toward Weapon Mastery progression. Only kills and damage in live matches with real players contribute to your mastery XP.
Do custom rooms count toward mastery?
Custom rooms with other real players count toward mastery XP. Solo bot rooms do not. Use custom rooms with friends or guild members when you want lower-pressure grinding that still earns progress.
What happens to my mastery skin if the weapon gets nerfed?
Mastery skins are permanent and stay on your account regardless of balance changes. The skin remains equipped even if the weapon drops entirely out of the meta.
The Grind That Pays You Back Every Single Match
Most reward systems in Free Fire require spending or participation in events. Weapon Mastery rewards consistency. The players with Level 4 badges did not get lucky. They showed up, focused on the right weapons, played in the right mode, and hit their headshots.
Pick your first weapon, commit to Clash Squad for the grind, and work on your headshot rate at the same time. The skin at Level 3 is the reward. The aim improvement that comes with it is what actually wins you matches.
